For safety reasons all participants must be a minimum of 15 years old.
For Eco Challenge Race, only amateur teams are allowed to participate. For Eco Challenge Pro Race, both professional and amateur teams are allowed to participate.
Each team is responsible for acquiring their own kayaks, and returning it to its proper owner after the race. The committee will not be responsible for lost, damaged or stolen kayaks. There will be a limited number of kayaks available for rent through the committee. Please inquire for cost and availability.
Only Malibu two and Malibu two XL sit on top kayaks will be allowed.
There must be at least five teams registered in each category for prizes to be assigned to the category, e.g. 5 female teams, 5 co-ed teams.
All categories are double; any person wishing to go single may do so but must use the same kayak, Malibu double kayak.
There will be three grand prizes (1st, 2nd, 3rd place) for each category at the end of the race for the overall race and individual station prizes for specific points along the route. Juniors will be awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. If a junior team wins the overall race, please note they will not be awarded also the first place for juniors, in such a case the first place junior will then go to the second junior team and so on. Amateur racers will not be eligible for Pro prizes or rankings.
The race will start promptly at pre-announced time and location. Late arrivals will be automatically disqualified and any and all monies paid will not be eligible for a refund.
If you plan to eat or stay at the campsite, all participants are asked to bring their own utensils (cup, plates, forks/spoon), to reduce garbage.
Please inform any friends or family who wish to follow along the race in their own vessels on either day of the race to keep away from any kayaks. The wake from the boats does affect the paddlers. All boats must stay a minimum of 50 feet from all the kayaks except when supplying water. Any participants using the wake from motor boats to better their times will face disqualification. Once any participant is towed or hauled by a boat they are automatically disqualified from the race.
All competitors must wear the assigned number behind their shirts. Participants are allowed to use any shirt and attire of their choice, however are required to display the number at all times.
Only participants below the age of 18 qualify as juniors. Please note that an Id must be presented when registering.
All participants are advised to please dress appropriately and take along sunscreen, and lots of drinking water. Sun stroke can cause very serious injury and we want our participants to be safe. Water will be provided along the route by support crews for all teams, but each team is encouraged to take along extra drinking water.
All teams must exit the area known as Cayo Frances by 10am, and have entered the Bacalar Chico Channel by 2pm. Competitors must complete the first portion of the race arriving at Basil Jones no later than 3:30pm in order to qualify to win the overall race. Teams that have not reached the cut off times for any section of the race will be pulled to next section of the race. This is for safety; the organizers do not want any team to be left behind after dark.
When kayakers reach the eastern side of island they are not allowed to paddle outside the reef. This will result in immediate disqualification from the race.
Participants are asked to take their own toiletries, tent, and any other personal items they may need. We urge all participants not to leave their personal items lying around unattended. The organizers will not be responsible for items lost or stolen. In the spirit of good sportsmanship we ask participants to please be respectful of the property of others.
The camp site at Basil Jones does not have running water, hence fresh water is very limited, so each participant is asked to bring their own water for bathing.
A boat will be available to transport all personal items needed at the campsite, on the morning of the race. Please ensure that all personal items are clearly labeled with your names. On the morning of the race participants will be directed to the assigned boat for items to be transported to the camp site, please ensure that you personally place your bags, etc. on the boat, we will not be responsible for items left behind.
Food at the camp site will be for race participants only. Please inform any friends, and family who wish to follow along, visit or stay at the camp site that food will not be provided for them.
Please be respectful of other team members while at the camp site. (NO LOUD NOISE)
No alcohol, drug paraphernalia or needles of any sort should be taken to the camp grounds or used at any time during the race. Immediate disqualification will result for violating this rule.
Teams are encouraged to pay close attention to these rules. The organizers of the race will not be responsible for mistakes made, or misunderstandings due to participants not reading the rules closely. Please address any questions or clarifications you might have or need before signing the application form. Participants must remember that signing the application form means that they agree to abide by all rules and regulations as set forth by the committee.
Once any member of a team participates in a pro category in any race in any country, they will not be eligible to participate in the amateur categories for future races. The committee reserves the right to have the final ruling on the Pro status of any participant.
The committee reserves the right to drug test any and all participants at any time before, during or after any race. Any member testing positive will be automatically disqualified and any and all prizes and ranking will be revoked.
Sportsman like conduct is expected at all times. Any participant that does not conduct themselves in this manner will be subject to disqualification.
All participants must be present for the competitors meeting the night before the race.
